名詞解釋： 連鎖索引是利用分類表的類目名稱編製的字順索引；連鎖索引法(Chain Indexing)係指以半自動方式，將一個由綜合(General)到具體(Specific)需要做索引的連續性細目的每一鏈(Chain)均作成主題款目，並按字順排列的方法。一條索引包括直接有關的類目名稱和類號，同時也包括幾個相關的類目名稱和類號，其編排形式是從具體(Specific)到綜合(General)，是依相反類目的順序。以杜威十進分類法為例： Step 1 500 Pure Science Step 2 580 Botanical Sciences Srep 3 582 Spermatophyta Step 4 582.1 Special Grouping Step 5 582.13 Flowering Plants Step 6 582.130 [form Indicator] Step 7 582.1309 Geographic Distribution Step 8 582.13097 North America Step 9 582.130979 Pacific States Step 10 582.1309795 Oregon Step 11 582.13097954 Northwestern Counties 根據此分類表，Columbia Valley應入582.13097954。Step 6與 Step 7是無意義的，Step 4與Step 11 也不屬查檢款目，可以刪除。Step 3有一同義字""Seedbearing Plants""宜加此款目。Step 3後有一隱藏的582-589 Taxonomic Botany，而Step 8與Step 9 之間亦有582.130973 United States。此外，Step 2 Botanical Sciences宜改用較通俗的Botany。Step 9 Pacific States可省略。Flowering Plants可能出現在Botany，也可能出現在Horticulture，Botany，所以二者都需作款目。以下便是完成的連鎖索引： Columbia Valley: Oregon: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.13097954 Oregon: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.1309795 Pacific States: United States: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.130979 United States: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.130973 North America: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.13097 Flowering Plants: Botany 582.13 Spermatophyta: Botany 582 Seedbearing Plants: Botany 582 Taxonomic Botany 582-589 Botany 580 Science 500 連鎖索引法的編排順序是從具體(Specific)到綜合(General)，如一個類號包括4個部分就至少要有4個款目，第1個款目包括4個詞，第2款目包括3個詞，第3個款目包括兩個詞，最後一個款目就是這一類目的上位類，它的內涵和外延是最廣泛的，如以上例為例： Columbia Valley: Oregon: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.1309．7954 Oregon: Flowering Plants: Botany 582.1309795 Flowering Plants: Botany 582.13 Botany 580 連鎖索引法的優點為：(1)款目之取捨嚴謹；(2)以半自動化方式選取款目，減少索引者的不確定性；(3)經濟效益高，因為許多類目的上層類目均相同，可共用而不需重複。 |
