圖書館新知通報服務起始於報導最新出版品資訊或新進到館的圖書資訊資源，現今常配搭個人化服務，依各類型使用者之特定興趣或研究專注的領域提供新近出版文獻的摘要性資訊或到館的通知，此服務兼具增進使用者對館藏的覺知與增加使用量。新知通報服務與專題選粹服務（selective dissemination of information，簡稱SDI）一詞常被視為同義詞，然而後者也可視為是新知通報服務的形式之一。自35年前出版的圖書資訊學百科全書中可知，新知通報服務的初衷乃著重於追蹤學科領域中的重大研究發現與進展，而非對某一學科主題進行完整的檢索與回顧。服務的項目一般包括有新出版期刊或期刊目次傳遞、新書出版通報，或是針對特定主題定期檢索與蒐集新的出版品、剪報等相關資源的服務，使用者需向圖書館登錄其興趣檔（interest profile），說明感興趣的主題領域或特定期刊名稱，當有新出版的期刊或圖書到館後，館員便會影印目次或書目甚至期刊全文傳送給使用者，或是每隔一段時間由館員進行特定主題檢索，再將符合條件的書目清單遞送給使用者，通知的頻率可由數日至數月不等，最好能讓使用者自行選擇適合的間隔，以免提供過時的資訊或對使用者形成一種資訊超載的干擾，此處新知通報也可以是一種為使用者篩選適當資訊以降低資訊超載的服務。圖書館傳遞新知通報服務的工具從最早以面呈紙本、電話溝通或書信通訊的方式進行，進而透過電子郵件與網路，近年來運用網路簡易資訊聚合（Really Simple Syndication，簡稱RSS）或Atom feed，新近則輔以運用手機簡訊或其他行動通訊管道，以達成「新」與「速」的目標。對於愈強調新速的主題與對設定間隔時間較頻繁者，通報的管道亦愈適合以主動推播至使用者端的方式進行。新知通報不僅僅是圖書館才有的服務，書籍、期刊出版商以及資料庫廠商多有提供各類型客製化的新知通報服務，連亦敵亦友的Google也提供「Google快訊」，讓網友自行設定主題關鍵字與選擇資訊類型，以使用者擇定的頻率（例如：每日或即時）寄送電子郵件主動通知網友，好追蹤跟生活和工作等相關的資訊。由於Google資訊量龐大，除非使用者能將關鍵字訂得精準，否則必定淹沒於資訊超載的洪流中。由此可見圖書館新知通報服務仍需具檢索與專業知識背景的館員替使用者進行資訊篩選與組織，並以使用者認定的合適頻率與管道進行才能發揮此一圖書館服務的專業價值。Current-awareness Service.
